Aspira Limited Successful Migration from On-Premises to Google Cloud. Future cloud growth with Cloudfresh

Aspira Cloudfresh Case

About the client: Aspira Limited (Aspira Ltd.) is a young yet experienced group of like-minded individuals who create awesome new sports-related IT products for users and large companies. The company gathers, processes, and analyzes data from the sports world to further apply it in the field of information technology.

Challenges

To develop new IT products related to sports for major companies and end users worldwide, Aspira Ltd. initially utilized a local environment, using a budget-friendly data center. However, over the next few years, the company expanded its infrastructure, doubling it annually. As the demands grew, the current data center still needed to meet the IT needs, necessitating significant planning, additional investment in hardware, and possible downtime during upgrades.

The company’s on-premises setup presented numerous challenges, from operational inefficiencies to scalability issues. They encountered delays in provisioning servers, struggled with hardware maintenance, and faced limitations in disaster recovery and physical space. Additionally, managing network connectivity, bandwidth, and technical staffing and expertise posed ongoing hurdles. That was the moment Aspira Ltd. started to consider transitioning to the cloud infrastructure.

Solutions

Choosing the cloud service provider

As Aspira Ltd. embarked on its search for a cloud service provider, the team outlined specific requirements to meet our evolving needs:

  1. Centralized log and monitoring systems.
  2. Spot instances for cost efficiency.
  3. Managed MySQL/NoSQL services.
  4. High-level SLA.
  5. Managed Kubernetes.
  6. Responsive support.
  7. Active cloud community.

After careful consideration among various cloud providers, Aspira Ltd. chose Google Cloud because of its close alignment with all the company’s needs and robust features, including production-ready managed Kubernetes. Consequently, they launched the migration process.

Migration process

The migration from our on-premises data center to the cloud was a pivotal moment in Aspira Ltd.’s journey towards modernization.

The first step in the migration process was establishing a secure network connection between the data center’s internal network and the Google Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). This ensured seamless communication between the existing infrastructure and the cloud environment.

With the groundwork laid, Aspira Ltd. embarked on the gradual migration of each service, one by one. This meticulous approach allowed for thorough staging testing and ensured the smooth transition of each component from on-premises to the cloud.

Throughout the migration, the team prioritized migrating critical services and workloads while leaving less critical ones in the data center. This strategic decision provided the company with a safety net, allowing the employees to maintain continuity in current operations and easily revert to the on-premises setup if needed.

After 5 months of meticulous planning and execution, the migration process was successfully completed. With all services migrated to the cloud, the Aspira Ltd. team took the bold step of backing up their on-premises data and shutting down the local data centers.
